If a child recovers compensation for injuries suffered in an accident in Wisconsin, the settlement must be approved by a judge, after learning about the injuries, the settlement, and the proposed way that the money will be invested. The money usually must be held in a safe account until the child turns 18, at which point the money, with the accrued interest, will be given to the child.

Injury settlements for children of more than $10K normally need to go through a court approval process and are paid into a formal guardianship account. The child's attorney will normally be the guardian ad litem, but the parent can often be the guardian, subject to court approval of all expenditures from the settlement fund. If you retain a PI lawyer, he can handle all of this paperwork, which amounts to two different lawsuits.

Do not assume that I am your attorney because of my response here, since I would not normally be taking any further action on your case.
