Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Wisconsin

My deceased father, an Illinois resident, owns property in Wisconsin. The neighbor to the property paid the property tax for the years following my father's death. The neighbor would like to buy the property. How do I initiate the transfer since my father's name is on the property deed?

Since your father was an Illinois resident, title to the Wisconsin property he owned at the time of his death must pass through an ancillary probate proceeding in Wisconsin. While that is not a terribly complex matter, it does deal with notices to creditors, and other matters that may "interact" with his initial probate in Illinois.

You will most likely need local counsel in Wisconsin. We have a number of attorneys that do such work and would be glad to work with you. You may reach me at 262-569-8300 and I will connect you up with the appropriate attorney.
