Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Wisconsin

My ex-boyfriend moved out two weeks ago leaving all of his belongings behind. I have no way to contact him nor do I know where he is living. He has come to my house on several occasions to pick through and take a few things, and to tell me he will be back on a specific date to take everything. He has yet to follow through. In Wisconsin, how long do I need to wait before I can remove his belongings myself?

This is a difficult question in WI, since there are no clear deadlines relating to domestic situations of abandoned property, unlike for landlord tenant situations, which create a presumption of abandonment at a relatively certain point. In order to legally dispose of the belongings, you might therefore actually need to sue him and get either a court order awarding you ownership of the property or judicial permission to dispose of it. My answer does not automatically make me your attorney, so you need to consult with your own attorney before acting upon any of my comments and may contact my office at 333 Main St, Racine, WI 53403, 262-633-3090, during business hours, or see me on the web at www.jayknixonlaw.com.
