Legal Question in Family Law in India

I am married to a NRI and other than Hindu ceremonial wedding pictures and videos the marriage was not registered. He has deserted me and now for taking legal action i have been asked to provide marriage certificate.

Its say that as per Hindus marriage registration is not compulsory but what everyone says is to fight a case against NRI husband its impossible without marriage certificate.

Please let me know what case i can file against him without marriage certificate ?
