what are the rights of an unmarried couple separating in france having 2 children and joint ownership of a house with the father bringing in the income having lived here for 5 years together.

I am afraid I would need more information to give you a useful answer. The house is clearly in 'indivision' and thus each spouse owns half, unless there is a clause in the deed which indicates that one of the parties is entitled to a 'recompense'.
