Legal Question in Real Estate Law in United Kingdom

Hi I need some advice on private renting please. We have been in a property for 17 months we been given notice to quit section 21 4 (a). I've been down to council to ask them for help and was told by them they cant help us until the courts send a bailif to change the locks but I feel they are asking me to break the law by telling us to stay here after notice date has past. Ive never had rent arrears can you please tell me where me and my family stand please we have 3 child council say that by stay in the property we could get temper accommodation. Is this correct please? We payed a month up front do we still have to pay last month's rent ? And lastly do we lose our deposit if we are not out by date on the section 21 letter? We keep getting different information I just like to know where I stand legally
