Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Alabama

Boyfriend cant pay his bills

I have a live-in boyfriend of two years, before we met, while he was attending college, he accumulated alot of debit, now with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice cannot find a decent paying job and therefore has fallen behind in payments. He is interested in filing bankrupsty, but that too cost $$. My question: Am I safe financially? I own my home and have a great paying job.. I am worried since we live together ( I gues common-law) do the collectors have any right to my belongings, accounts, etc... Thanks

Re: Boyfriend cant pay his bills

Normally even if you are married one spouse's bills are not the responsibility of the other spouse. Here is an article we wrote on this recently - http://www.alabamaconsumerlawblog.com/2008/01/are_spouses_responsible_for_th_1.html

Do pull your credit reports for free to make sure his debts are not on your reports - http://www.alabamaconsumerlawblog.com/2007/03/first_critical_step_to_correct.html

If you are being contacted by debt collectors keep these in mind -

Best of luck,
