Legal Question in Criminal Law in Arizona

Minor in Consumption

My 18 yer old stepson was cited in Casa Grande, AZ for minor in consumption of alcohol. (He was spending the summer visiting his father.) He was a passenger in a car with 2 other kids, one 18, one 17 years old. They obtained the beer from a friend, age 21. This is the first offense for our son of any kind.

What are the possible penalties here? Should we have an attorney present at the court hearing?

Thank you for your reply.

Re: Minor in Consumption

It is a fact of life that all teenagers get in trouble with the law. It is also a fact of life that legal troubles can last a long time and affect employment and other aspects of one's future if not dealt with correctly. Parents who leave their kids to the mercy of the system (i.e. the public defender) often regret it. If I were you I would do everything possible to have a private lawyer accompany your son to court. This is just general advice, as I am not licensed in AZ and I don't know what the law is there.

A possible fine, community service and a mandatory 2 year drivers license suspension. These cases should be fought.

Re: Minor in Consumption

The Arizona conviction will probably follow him to California. This could result in his driver's license California be suspended.
