Can you break a rental lease if your job is being relocated to another state? Does the landlord have any legal rights to come after you for the remaining lease balance due?

A person does not have an automatic right to break a lease for any reason, unless the terms of the lease provide for it. Some leases have what they call a "Force Majeure" clause that allow for the lease terminate for "acts of God" or other unforeseen events. However, relocation of a job is usually not one of them.

Yes, the landlord has the right to sue you for the remaining term of the lease, but the landlord first has an obligation to mitigate damages by trying to find another tenant.
