Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Australia

Harrassment From Optus Telecom

Hello

My wife use to reside in Australia. She left the country permanantly in aug 04. She had a contract with Optus for her cell phone which was still valid for about a year. When she called to closed her account, Optus informed her that she would have to pay an early termination fee. My wife informed them that she would rather pay her contract out till it expires. The cust rep agreed with her and informed her that he would send her a consolidated final statement. My wife also provided a forwarding address to them.

Few months passed by and she didnt hear anything from them. One fine day she got a letter from a collection agency that her account is past due and now she owes them $600 (originally only abt $200). We have gone back and forth with them trying to resolve this issue and have offered to pay the original $200. we tried to explain to them that we were waiting on the statement and that my wife didnt reside in Australia any longer.

They keep sending us notices. What should we do given the fact that she doesnt reside in Australia any longer. We DONOT want to pay the rediculous collection fees. Please advice. Thank you.

Advise them to sue or close the file. Ignore demands. If sued call me.
