Legal Question in Family Law in Australia

Name Change

I'm an American, not a permanent resident, married recently to an Australian citizen. I realized I changed my name too quick to my married name and now want/need to go back to my pre-married name. Without going back to U.S., how do I do this?

Re: Name Change

There is actually no law (at least in Queensland) that makes it an offence to use a name other than the name that appears on your birth certificate unless of course you are using the other name for fraudulent purposes, etc.

Accordingly, people can use their maiden name, their married name, any combination of them, etc at their own discretion. The difficulty is usually in relation to proving that you are who you say you are. If you are using your birth name it is easy, you have a birth certificate. If you are using a married name, it is easy too, you have a marriage certificate.

The short of it is, you can just go back to using your maiden name at your discretion. You may just have to have sufficient identification to prove that you are that person if you need to open bank accounts, etc.
