Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Thank you for you time to answer my question,My son lost his job a month ago,he is 20 yrs of age.6 months ago he moved out of my home with a friend and is renting a house,also bought 2 vehicles within 6 months,he owes approx 30,000 on both vehicles,plus 1100 a month for rent,and general bills like ellectric ,gas,water cable.He cannot pay, he is 2 months behind on paying them.Vehicles are 10 days from getting repoed. He lives in California, is Chapter 7 the best way to go, or just let the bank take the vehicles?? My understanding is repo and bankruptcy is both 7-10 yrs of bad credit?? What is your advice...
