The requirement for a business license would be determined by city (or county) ordinance. In most places, most kinds of businesses will require a license. Cities and counties love to collect license fees, so they make it pretty easy to find out where to apply and pay. Check the government section of your phone book for the city where your business is located, or if it's in an unincorporated area, for the county.

I agree with Mr. Whipple. You are going to have to check the municpal code for the city where you want to do business. There is no overall statewide requirement, unless you are conducting a business in a profession governed by the Business and Professions Code.

The other attorneys are right on point. Being self-employed has nothing to do with business license requirements. The business license is usually a nominal fee. Check with the city hall in the town where you reside. Consult with a business attorney in your area for specific advice if more assistance is needed.
