can I cash this check?

about 5 years ago i went threw a divorce..my x and I had funds (stocks) that were invested with a well known firm..and in the process of out divocred I did not receive all of the funds .I was told by that firm that I would have to contract their lawlyers if I wanted to take action,which meant I would have to hire a lawlyer which would cost more then the money that I did not receive,so Ijust dropped the mater,now 5 yrs later I cashed out my remaining stocks,,and they sent me a check ,then 4 days later I recevied another check,for almost the same amount,but it is a diffent amount,,because of what happen 5 yrs ago I'm temped to keep both tho checks,,and I was wondering if am in my rights to do so since both checks were delivered by US mail?

If the check is made out to YOU and you reasonably believe you are entitled to the money, you can try keeping it. You may be asked to pay it back later if there is a mistake.

If the check is made out to someone else OR you have reason to believe that the money belongs to someone else, then keeping it would be theft, and you could go to jail.
