Legal Question in Business Law in California

I am opening a business and some of my partners family have it out for us. What can I do to protect us from slander? It's a big concern as they have no limits.

Step one might be to visit with a local attorney who can do two things for you: (1) give you an understandable legal definition of is necessary to constitute actionable (i.e., worthy of a lawsuit) slander and libel; and (2) if warranted, send a letter to the family member(s) to warn them not to commit libel or slander. I'd be a little cautious about sending warning letters, however, in some situations a warning letter might just be inflammatory.

I meant to say "of WHAT is necessary" ---- somehow I omitted one word.

There is nothing you can do to prevent that because you have no control over some other individual. Just remember that expressing one's opinion is not defamation. IN order for it to be actionable defamation it has to be false information and they should have no reason to believe its veracity.

If it does happen, you can hire a lawyer to respond to it at that time.

If you would like to discuss further over a free phone consult, feel free to contact me anytime that is convenient.

Kind regards,
