Legal Question in Business Law in California

Help, Quick Question

I work at a retail store and was suspected of stealing from the store. I quit before being fired. Now the District Manager threatens to sue me. Is that possible? Do I have an defense for this?

Why should quitting insulate you from being sued? What matters is if you really stole from the store, not if you still work there. Even a thief who never worked there could be sued, so there is no reason quitting should protect you.

Do you have a defense? I don't know. That you recently quit isn't a defense, but many other potentially viable defenses might be available to you. Even if you have no defense to offer, the store has the burden of proof and might not be able to meet it.

You need a lawyer ASAP. Good luck.
