Legal Question in Business Law in California

small Flooring Company

Do I have to have a contractor's license to own a flooring company? I use a licensed contractor on all of my jobs but i was wondering if i am required to have a license as well.

Re: small Flooring Company

If you are holding yourself out as a "flooring company" that installs floors, you need a contractor's license. If all you are doing is selling materials and not providing any labor, you may need a resale license, but not a contractor's license.

It really depends on what exactly you are doing. There is no requirement to have a license is suppling the materials. If you are supplying and installing the flooring, you need a license.

Even if you sub out the installation to a licensed contractor, you should not include the installer's services in your contract. The better solution is to get a license or have the installer contract directly with the owner.
