Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

We bought a car from a guy who purchased a car from an auction, as a "export only" car and sold it to us, not knowing about the export deal. When we purchased the car it had tags and registration, when we went to change it to our name, the tags were resended by DMV and they toldus it can never be registered in California?

What can we do?

You were fore-warned that your car may be a problem. You bought anyway. You got a problem. Sell it to some other un-suspecting poor slob. And I did not give you this illegal advice to violate fraud rules.

There are several unanswered questions in your post. Was the guy who bought the car at auction a "dealer"? If he was then you may have some recourse. If he wasn't, was he an unlicensed dealer? For example did he sell 5 or more cars in the past year? If yes report him to the DMV and let them crack down on his illegal activity. Was the car parked on the street with a bunch of other cars with the same telephone numbers? It may be an unlicensed dealer.

How much did you pay for the car? If less than $7,500 go to small claims court and let a judge decide if you were defrauded. All is not lost. However, in the future, when buying from a private party always take the person to DMV with you before you give up your hard earned money.

Good luck.
