Buying a used car

If i buy a used car from a private owner and they say i cannot bring it to a machanic because they've cancelled the insurance. What recourse do i have if i buy it and bring it to my machanic and something is very wrong? Can i get my money back...

You can't bring the car to a mechanic? Don't buy the car. Buy one of the zillions of other used cars out there.

Your recourse? Don't buy it. If he won't let you have it inspected, don't buy it. The Car Czar and Click and Clack agree that you should always have a car inspected before you buy it. I would follow their advice on this one.
