Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Verizon renewed my c ontract without telling me

I was moving to a new house where I did not need my verizon service and called them to see if it could be suspended. They told me it could not, and if I canceled then I would have to pay an early termination fee. I told the CSR the move was temporary and she said what she could do is offer me 4 months free internet, which i would then be able to cancel soon after because my contract happened to expire 5 months later.

now it is february and the contract was supposed to expire this month, but when I called to cancel, they told me the contract was renewed when the CSR gave me the 4 free months in september. I told them I never agreed to a renewal of the contract but the CSR (and then the supervisor) kept implying that it was still my fault because I accepted the 4 free months (the implication was that by getting the 4 free months I was ''obviously'' agreeing to a contract)

I do not want to continue to pay for this service or pay an early termination fee since i never agrred to a contract renewal. But if I refuse to pay Verizon I am sure they will file some sort of collection agaisnt me. What should I do?

I would like to discuss this matter with you. It sounds like Verizon is employing unfair and unlawful business practices. There are probably thousands of victims of this same practice.

Please call or email at your convenience.
