Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

can a collection agency collect on a private school loan (not backed by the govt.) that I applied for back in 2002? I filed for bankruptcy in 2007 and it wasn't discharged so I was making payments to citibank the original creditor but stopped because I couldn't afford to. they didnt contact me very much after that. but when I hired lexington law to clean up my credit I think this recently started the collection process because they sent challlenge letters to them. however the debt was charged off and deleted off my equifax report (not sure about the other reports )...I'm going to do the debt validation process but still can they collect on this debt if the debt is old and been deleted? thanks for your advice.

Unless the debt was discharged in the bankruptcy, they can still collect on it.
