Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

a credit card I had 7 years ago closed with a balance of 1,000.00 i called the credit card company closed the card and ceased payment. I was in a bad place could not pay and they turned it over to numerous collections agencies. now five years later, they are sending me statements like nothing happened and the bill is now 2500.00 with new over limit and late fees accruing. I checked online and California has a statue of limitations of 3 years. can I use that to stop them for calling and harrassing me all over again?

Go to the head of the class. Some people would have gotten scared and paid them; or worse, made a partial payment or a promise to pay which could reset the statute; or even worse, given the collection agency their bank account number. Please do write them and advise them that the debt is disputed as legally uncollectible; and if they do sue, please do write back. In two more years this item will drop from your credit report for most purposes.
