Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

dispute with the telephone company over the phone charges

~ 2 mo. ago my dad called our long-distance provider to remove a few 1-min calls, which we had no problem doing in the past (9 yrs). This time, the rep refused to do so which got my dad upset. He told the rep he will consider dropping the company. The rep told dad to call our local phone company. After one month we received a bill about 5 times our regular one. My dad called & talked to the supervisor who told him the rep took him off a special plan we used. My dad explained the rep did not say anything about the removal & we were not notified (oral or written) about the removal of the plan. He said that if he had known about the removal, then he would have called right back to reverse it. The supervisor said nothing could be done once bill is rec'd. I got on the phone with other supervisors that said there is nothing they can do. I asked for the manager, but managers do not talk to the customers. I can only write a letter, which I did. I called again, and was told that the manager did not approve adjusting the bill.

We sent a payment (what the bill would have been under the plan - the rep calculated for me) & received the a bill which indicates last month's charges and $480 + about 1.5% interest left.

Re: dispute with the telephone company over the phone charges

The company committed fraud. In my view, you're not obligated to pay the increased bill. I would change phone companies in the not pay the bill.
