Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

can an item (tool box) be reposed when the person that was making the payments on it has now passed away? Account was only in his name, balance due approx. $4000 wife now has tool box wants to keep for her sons can't afford has been told by others it should be absolved company is saying it has to be paid off she can't afford. State of Calif...help

Why should the death of the debtor result in someone else being able to keep property not yet fully paid for. Your husband's estate is liable for the rest of the payments and if it can not make the payments, then the real owner is able to repossess.
