Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have a large hospital bill, which was not covered by my insurance. I sent a payment of $50.00, which was accepted and cashed. I also spoke with someone in the financial dept., informing them of my ability to only pay $50.00. However, I keep getting threatening letters in the mail. Doesn't the fact that my payment was cashed mean anything, and if so, is there a "name" for it?

Balance billing is illegal. You owe no more than what your insurance paid them. Contact your insurance carrier in writing for more information.
