Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Life insurance collected on credit cards w/debt owed

My question is: My mother passed away. She was disabled and had no money but lots of credit card debt. On two of the credit cards she had life insurance. When I called they said just fill out the papers and we could collect the life insurance to pay for my mom's funeral expenses. We did collect the money (she had been paying for the life insurance) and used it for the funeral. Now we are receiving letters from the credit card companies looking for someone to pay them. Can they go after us for the life insurance money? I sent them letters and copies of the death certificate but I am wondering if we will have to pay them from the money we collected? One credit card balance was only 175.00 but the other one was about 9,000.00. She had no assests and we were not aware of the debt until after her death. Thank you for any help you can give.
