wage garnishment

I received a call from a lawyer telling me I will have a court order issued to garnish my wages. How long does this process take and what is the largest amount they can take by law. The debt is 10000

First they have to sue you and win. Is the debt over four years old, or could there be some other defense? Are you being sued by the original creditor, or by some company you never heard of? If you are sued and lose, they could take 25% of your wages.
