Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have a Western Dental bill for around $1700.00. Was $2900 but I paid some off. Reliant Recovery Services contacted me about 5 months ago then the calls ceased. Now I am being call and told that if I do not make an arrangement by Friday, they will file with the courts and get a judgement. I do not have a SS# but they do have cancelled checks from prior payments. They said they would give me a few days and the file with the courts and that I should be aware of the court fees being added to the judgement and that they can garnish my wages. I am currently unemployed as far as they are concerned. I do a little work where I get paid cash. Are they just threatening me and will they go to court for this amount and if so should I try and make an arrangement for like 100.00 per month to saisfy them.

Thanks Tim

The answer depends on how old the debt is. If over four years old you should not pay or agree to pay anything. If you are unemployed there is nothing they can do to you. It's against the law to threaten to sue without actually suing you, so you might want to wait and see. if you have many other debts you might want to consider BK in case you get a job again, so you can get a fresh start.
