Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Criminal information

My adult son was arrested and I called the police to get information about why he was arrested. Are they obligated to give me information about what happened over the phone?

Re: Criminal information

I would be surprised if the arresting police agency gave you any information other than the bail amount and charge. Possibly the web site of the county sheriff's department or jail facility will also list his bail amount and the charge. Use the phone to help him get a lawyer and a bail bonds person.

Do not attempt to discuss the case with your son in jail visits or phone calls, they are monitored and anything he says will be used against him. He should not be discussing the case with fellow inmates, or anybody at all (other than his own lawyer). Especially, he should not be saying anything at all to the police. If you taught him well, he knows that much already.

Re: Criminal information

Unfortunately, the police have no obligation to tell you anything. If your son were a minor the situation would be a bit different. Your major task is to see him bailed out which will make all the difference in terms of ability to fight his case.

Feel free to contact me regarding your son's case.
