How is it determined what prison they send you to from jail?

First stop is an Inmate Reception Center where the inmate undergoes classification for about 6-8 weeks. The inmate's prior criminal history and educational attainment are factors. After classification, the inmate is often, but not always, transferred to another facility which could be anything from fire camp to a maximum security lockup.
