Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Misrepresenting ones self as a military vet

A guy I know has misrepresented his military background to the general public, claiming medals and campaigns he did not receive/take part in. He is a Lawyer in California. Can he have is license removed, or suspended for this action. He is concerned, but I think taking away his ability to practice law is extreme. Thank you for considering my question.

Re: Misrepresenting ones self as a military vet

If the attorney is misrepresenting his background to recruit clients, obtain employment or for other financial gain, this would violate the rules governing attorney conduct. Basically, it amounts to fraud. On the other hand, a misrepresentation of this sort that occurs in a social setting would be no more than a (misguided) cry for approval. I don't see that as actionable. It may become a bit tricky though if a person he meets that way is so impressed that the attorney gets hired. Then I think, the attorney would have an obligation to correct the record with the new client if it appears that the client relied on the false information in making the decision to hire the attorney.
