A violation of Penal Code sectionn 508 is embezzlement. However, determining the statute of limitations depends on the punishment, as that would classify it as a misdemeanor or a felony. You do not state what was embezzled or how much, which is necessary to answer your question because the punishment for embezzlement is punished in the same manner as the theft. (Pen. Code, sect. 514.) Additionally, if the underlying theft is considered a wobbler, the answer will also depend on how the prosecutor is charging it.

Second, it is not clear as to whether you refer to Penal Code section 487 subdivision (a) which is grand theft of real or personal property exceeding $400, or Penal Code section 487a, which is felonious stealing of an animal's carcass.
