Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

My vehicle was the victim of vandalism. I know who did it there were witnesses and a police report was filed. The perpetraters public defender is now trying to contact me for a statement. I dont want to do or say anything that will help perpetraters case. any advice? what information should i or shouldnt I give out? Do i need a laywer?

It may be that the public defender wants to know how much damage was done to your vehicle, and how you determined the cost of repairing your vehicle. To discuss how you feel about sentencing. You don't need an attorney, but you are certainly entitled to one. If you have been contacted by the prosecutor and are a key witness in the case, I would suggest letting the prosecutor know as well.
