Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Copyright Laws re:VHS/CDs/DVDs

We have a home theater business (LLC Nevada corp w/license to do business in California) and want to use DVDs/VHS for demonstration purposes at an upcoming county fair where we will have an exhibit. We have seen this done at trade shows --NAB/INFOCOMM/etc., and need to know what guidelines we must follow. Are there usage fees/legal docs that must be completed? If so, who would we contact? Any and all help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance. dd :)

The easiest and best solution is to use one of the demo tapes produced, say, by a HDTV manufacturer.

Contact the copyright holders of each program you want to show. If it's going to 'promote' the program and show just a brief clip, then you might get permission. Contact the business affairs dept. of the studios to start. You might also contact the video trade association - VSDA --Video Software Dealer's Assn. -- for guidance.
