Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Film Financier Paying to See Their Film

As a financial backer of a motion picture, is that person automatically exempt, legally, from paying admission to see the film they financed? Any feedback would be appreciated.

No, but film angels can deduct the price of admission, popcorn, etc. as a business expense.

No, you can deduct the cost of admission as part of your research on your investment.

Nothing is automatic. The film's producers SHOULD have invited the financiers to the premiere or a screening (as a matter of common courtesy and good sense)... but unless the CONTRACT calls for it... free admission is NOT required.

As a financial backer, if you are referring to saving $10 on seeing the show in the theater, I believe that is the least of your concerns. Technically the answer is probably that the Movie Theater can charge you for admission. If you would like some serious representation regarding your interests, please feel free to contact me.

Best,

Daniel
