Legal Question in Family Law in California

Name Change

When I married I hyphenated my last name with my husbands. Now I wish to drop the hyphen and go by my husbands last name. Must I go through the courts or can I just start using it? If I just start using it, how can I prove to DMV, SSN, etc. I'm now going by that name or do I need to change them?

Re: Name Change

Just start using the new name--I'm not sure, but I believe you can notify Social Security of the new name and they'll update their records.
