Legal Question in Family Law in California

My husband and I are getting a divorce in CA. We're divorcing on good terms--technically best friends--but moving on. We are beginning the paperwork and the petition for divorce which asks for the date of separation (we understand the financial obligations and ramifications). I want to file the petition the first week of Feb 2014 but we are considering our actual separation May 1, 2014 when he will be moving out. Is this ok or does our separation date have to be dated before the date I file the petition? Thanks!

You separation date is the date you two live separate from each other with no intent of resuming marital relations.
