To get a change on your marriage certificate, if it's a simple clerical error I don't see why the recorder wouldn't be able to change the certificate for you. Your first place to start investigating would be to speak with the county recorder to ask them if its possible to make a change. If they do not agree then you would somehow have to get a court order ordering that change. The proper court order would depend on what kind of change you are looking to do.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
