Legal Question in Family Law in California

i opened my child custody case without a lawyer because i didnt have one.a month and a half later i obtained one.lawyer advised me not to mention i have a lawyer to my son's mother and to keep my petition self-represented until the actual trial date (witch by the way son's mother did not attend only responded to my petition).then at trial in court i signed a paper he(LAWYER) told me to sign before the hearing that allowed him to represent me.is all this legal? and if it's not,can this case become a mistrial?
