Legal Question in Family Law in California

What do I do next?

I was a victim of domestic violence for several years. I found a way out of the relationship (which produced two children.)My way out was to sneak away to safety 400 miles from where the abuse took place yes I took the children with me. I immediatly applied for a restrsining order against the abuser. While waiting for the hearing the abuser was granted temporary custody and at the hearing for the restaining order, which was granted, the judge excluded the children from the RO and allowed the abusers parents to have the temporary custody. They never kept the children however and this was diecovered at an immediate mediation appearance. He still has the temp custody as I prolonged the judges decision as I only spoke to the mediator for 10 minutes as the abuser spent hours with her while painting me to be a horrid parent. I have evidence showing that I was the only parent who attended all school functions EIP meetings, parent conferences etc... as well as the parent who fed, cared for and managed all medical care for the children. I also have this RO as well as a recent tape of the abuser admitting the abuse and actually giving dates when the abuse occurred.

Re: What do I do next?

Your next step is to consult with a local lawyer familiar with the judges in your local court to determine the best next step. I wish I could be more specific, but your case sounds VERY complicated, and warrants more than a 2 paragraph response. If you can't afford an attorney, there's many free and reasonably priced alternatives. Try your local Bar Association. If you're near LA, the number is (213) 627-2727. Good luck!
