Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

Grandparent Has Child

My grandaughter was left in my care at one week of age suddenly when the mother was given a parole violation. The father is in prison. How can the grandparent get the 12 weeks family leave with pay when the child is not ill. I was approved for leave time but without pay after the first few weeks. In order for me to return to work I have to receive some cash aid to pay for child care. This assistance has been delayed and there will be at least 2 more weeks before cash is available for child care. This may be a temporary situation but it is not verified at this time how long the child will be in my custody but could be up to 8 months. To not be paid while taking care of a newborn infant will put me way be behind financially. I have already filed bankruptcy. What can be done. If I were the mother I would get the 6 weeks maternity leave but I am the grandmother.

Re: Grandparent Has Child

Family leave does not cover your situation. You will need to look for other forms of assistance.
