Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

my ex-boyfriend took my car to another state (NV), I live in CA, within my permission. I didn't file a police report at the time (a little under 1 year ago). I know he was pulled over & my car was impounded. however I had no clue he was involved in an accident until recently. I am now getting letters from the person who was hit in the mail telling me about the charges. is there anything I can do to get off the hook for this. I'm willing to file a police report if its not too late. I was the registered owner of the car. but I did not give permission for my car to be driven. it was only supposed to be parked since my insurance was just cancelled and I was trying to catch up on my car notes.

If the accident was in Nevada, you should repost the question in the category for Nevada attorneys to answer. California law on the liability of an owner of a car that is involved in an auto accident may be different than Nevada law, which appears to govern your situation right now.
