Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

My name is Latosha I obtained a kitten for my daughters from a neighbor of my mothers and was unable to keep cat at my home so in turn i took the cat to my ex husbands house so that my daughters could still enjoy it. The cat did not want to stay in the house so it became an outside cat. My ex husband and his manager of his apartment complex stated that even though other ppl had animals the owner was not allowing any new ones. So therefore I needed to find the cat a new home. I informed the manager that I would have cat gone by a certain date. Even when the date passed I continued to find a home for the now adult cat. Once I found a home for the cat I took the cat. After which I was approached by another neighbor stating that the cat was theirs and they wanted him back or money for previous doctors bills. Now the neighbor is stating he will sue me for compensation for cat.

You need to establish why they claim the cat is theirs and what proof they have [did it just stay near their home while it was outside?]. It sounds as though they abandoned the cat while it was at your ex's house. Cats are considered personal property so all the could sue you for is the value of the cat which might be a few hundred dollars at most.
