Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I owe money to a law firm for a shoplifting fine. They recently called my home and disclosed information to my step mother about the money I owe and the nature of the account. I am 21 years old and a resident in California. Is this legal and if not what should be my next step?

They should not have done what the did. If you want to pursue the matter, your best option is probably to file a complaint with the State Bar.

Jonathan is right they shouldn't have done that, but reporting them to the State Bar is a waste of time. They didnt do anything that is against the Bar Rules of Professional Conduct but they may have violated both the state and federal fair debt collection practices acts. Contact a debt collection lawyer to sue them instead that way you might make some money off them.

Hope that helps and good luck.
