can a plaintiff sue as with an anonymous name, and under what conditions will they have to reveal their identity? are there cases that back up the right to anonymity?

I'm unaware of any way to file "anonymously" in the way that you are describing; however, there is a form you can fill out to request that the lawsuit be filed without public access or publication. The court clerk could help you locate that form.

There is a procedure for filing the matter "under seal" which would limit public access, but I am not aware of a way to file anonymously.
