Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

What rights do mechanics have when a customer is trying to sue?

I hope I have this under the right category!

I have a friend who is a mechanic. He fixed something to do with a wheel hub on an older model

RV. The customer had the RV towed back to the shop and said that it was the mechanics fault that the axel broke on it. He claims that the mechanic is at fualt because he must have changed something or failed to notice that the axel was going bad or had problems with it.He seems to think that working on the hub had something to do with the axel breaking and he wants this mechanic to pay for the new rearend and the labor to change it. What kind of rights does my friend have in this case?

he doesnt have to pay a dime unless they get a court judgment whcih they wont get unless they have proof of the cause of the damage.
