Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

My son s vehicle was stolen from the parking lot designated for the students attending that school. There are gates at entrance and exit of school parking lot that are to be closed and locked during school hours only to be open at lunch if students are allowed to leave. There is supposed to be a campus security at the gate during that time and they check the ids of kids that are allowed to leave the campus for lunch. other than those times the gates are to be locked. they do not and did not have the gates locked that day. I was wondering if they are negligent in the fact that they did not keep the parking lot secure?

The reason they are lock gates is to keep kids in school, not to prevent cars from being stolen.

Negligence is a breach of duty they owe an inidividual. Schools probably dont have a duty to protect personal property that is there. I dont see much difference in this than having a parking lot with an attendant and car was stolen...Maybe somone else has a different perspective but I dont think a suit here would get much traction.
