Legal Question

L1 to H1 conversion

I am in US on L1 visa.If I apply for H1 in Apr 2007 what happens to my L1 status in Oct 2007, when H1 gets approved. Is change of status done automatically. Can I continue on L1 beyond Oct 2007, if I want to.
