Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

dog bite

my girlfriend and I ,along with her pitbull, rented a place on Aug 1. on labor day weekend my neighbor was doing my brakes for me at house. he asked me to get his wife to come at one point to bring him ice water.(I dont have a icebox) she came over with her 3 yr old son as she often did, and ended up hanging out. It was getting dark so the 3 yr old was holding the light for his dad. All the while the dog was out too. Hindsight Im an stupid idiot for not putting the dog in after they appeared to be staying because without warning the unthinkable... the dog bit the kid in the face. Its all bad. the boy is ok thank God & the dog has been put down. The dog has a history of biting and the guilt inside of me words cant describe. Its my girlfriends dog & I know she would've put him in if she knew they were here. The kids mom is on welfare so medicaire supposedly is paying the $45000 + in med bills. They said they are filing a claim against our landlords insurance. Can they do that since we have nothing? Or is that after a judgement been placed on me? The mom knows 2 people that have been bit by this dog before hand, along with the neon beware of dog sign on the fence...Its still my fault so how do I pay when I havenoth

Re: dog bite

Prudent people who rent houses buy renters insurance for maybe $100 per year. Not buying insurance is the same as making a bet that something bad won't happen. If you lost your bet, expect to get sued. If you do have renter's insurance, call them right away. If not, don't talk to the other people or their lawyer or any insurance company. If you get sued, call an attorney right away.
