Author Publishing Contract Help

I was just offered a book contract by

a smaller press, but there are a few

items that I'm not sure about,

mainly the rights the publisher gets,

and any locked-in terms/times as far

as me later submitting to another

publisher. I have the contract in

word form, and can send that if need

be

A good lawyer should pay for him(her)self in this context. But you should not expect them to work for free, any more than the publisher should expect to receive the rights to your book for free.

Small publishing contracts usually provide that the publisher is going to maintain exclusive rights to the work done, indefinitely. Authors are then paid a royalty - to be negotiated - as a multiplier of actual sales.

Of course, your written contract will dictate the actual terms.
